Marzamemi – Malta Regatta: A Surreal Finish After a Fast Crossing

The Marzamemi - Malta Regatta, organized by the Royal Malta Yacht Club, delivered a fast and eventful race this year. The fleet departed from Marzamemi at 9:00 AM, with steady winds between close-hauled and beam reach propelling the boats swiftly toward Malta.

Most of the fleet approached Marsamxett Harbour around 6:00 PM just as a surreal twist unfolded: a sudden 180-degree wind shift caught the competitors off guard. What had been a fast crossing turned into a dramatic, slow-motion finish with light downwind conditions just outside the port, challenging crews one last time. Among the standout performances: MareAmore (RM1260), skippered double-handed by Ugo Vinti and Federico Saccani, won the RMYC Class in its debut appearance in Malta. Geisha, skippered by Stefan Debattista, claimed first in IR1. Janissah, helmed by Mario Debono, secured victory in the IRC Class. Jarhead, skippered by Gary Marcieca for the Jarhead Young Sailors Foundation, triumphed in the IR2 Class. The regatta combined speed, tactics, and an unexpected finale—an authentic expression of offshore sailing in the Mediterranean.
